Hydraulic oil is the "blood" of your excavator. Its color and clarity provide a direct visual report on the health of your pumps, valves, and cylinders. Use this guide to catch problems before they lead to catastrophic failure.
1. Milky or Cloudy White
Diagnosis: Water Contamination.
Cause: Water has entered the system through worn seals, a cracked reservoir, or condensation during temperature changes.
Risk: Water causes rust, reduces lubrication, and can destroy the high-precision pistons in your hydraulic pump.
Action: Drain the system, flush with clean oil, and replace all filters.
2. Dark Brown or Black
Diagnosis: Oxidation and Thermal Degradation.
Cause: The oil has been "cooked" due to excessive operating temperatures (overheating). It can also indicate that the oil is long overdue for a change.
Risk: Burnt oil loses its viscosity and creates "varnish" or sludge that clogs control valves and orifices.
Action: Change the oil immediately and inspect the Hydraulic Oil Cooler for blockages.
3. Foamy or Aerated
Diagnosis: Air Contamination (Aeration).
Cause: Air is being sucked into the pump, usually through a leak in the suction line or a low oil level in the tank.
Risk: Leads to Cavitation, which sounds like "marbles" rattling in the pump. This will physically pit and erode metal surfaces inside the pump.
Action: Tighten all suction line fittings and top up the oil to the correct level.
4. Sparkling or Glinting
Diagnosis: Mechanical Wear.
Cause: Metal particles are suspended in the oil.
Risk: This is a "Red Alert." It means a pump, motor, or cylinder is actively grinding itself away.
Action: Stop the machine immediately. Check the magnetic drain plug and filters for metal shavings to identify which component is failing.
